An instantaneous water heater only heats water once an outlet is opened and the hot water comes out instantly. It will continuously heat water as it passes through the unit. When the outlet is closed, the energy source shuts off. As these units heat cold water as it flows through the heater, storage of hot water is not required, saving you hundreds of $$ every month!
In can be installed virtually anywhere but its main advantage is that it is ideally suited for for single point applications. It is fueled by either electricity or gas. instantaneous units are designed for mains pressure supply and can have a maximum operating pressure of up to 1000KPA.
Depending on the size of your home the instant water heater must be sized correctly to ensure your flow of hot water does not starve out. Most common sizes are 20L/Minute 27L/Minute and 32L/Minute. In the example above we have installed a Rheem 27 to a 2n bedroom villa in Remuera.

Very often we get clients calling us saying there is a pipe that is constantly dripping outside their house and they want it fixed so that it stops. The first thing that we do Is try to educate the clients on what the role of this valve is along with the rest of the valves on the hot water cylinder. So what does a Cold Water Expansion valve do??
When your cylinder is filled with cooler water at high pressure after you, let’s say have used it for a shower or filling the sink with hot water, the element comes on to heat the water back up to it maximum temperature. The water being heated up causes the water molecules expand and increases the already high pressure in your hot water cylinder to even higher. The Cold Water Expansion has 2 roles in this situation,
- it’s a safety mechanism that releases excess water pressure from your hot water cylinder as it heats up to avoid over pressurizing,
- it’s a energy saving device, because it is installed where the cold water comes into your cylinder, it drips out cold water instead of other valves at the top of your cylinder wasting and dripping hot water.
So this valve is made to drip while the cylinder is heating, however if yours is dripping all day and all night constantly this may indicate it is time get us in to replace the valve or investigate other issues that may be forcing the valve to drip.
How do I know my cold water expansion valve is working?
Check that the valves on-top of your cylinder are not discharging any water because if they are then the cold water expansion valve isn’t doing its job, also when you do manually turn your cold water expansion valve on, look for discoloration of the water as this indicates the valve is rusted internally or the rubber seal has perished and is no longer effective. If you are still concerned, getting a hot water cylinder service by us includes checking this valve and others thoroughly.
Talk about limited space! When we arrived onsite we immediately knew we would be challenged with this exceptional under-bench hot water cylinder. Existing cylinder tank is 45 Liters and needs to be replaced (burst) with an equivalent size. The problem though is that the new Rheem hot water cylinder is much wider at 535mm in diameter. This is mainly due to the fact that newer hot water cylinders are now manufactured with more insulation making them “fatter”. after Disassembling and relocating all plumbing to the left hand side of the sink bench we gained further 150mm which made it possible to fit the new under bench cylinder and ensure all valves trains and wastes are installed as required by NZS 3500. What initially seemed impossible worked out to be a 4.5 hour installation with a very pleased client! Another successful job for hotwatercylinders.nz!
Low Pressure, Replacing like for like, some considerations…
This Cylinder came in last week, it was in a holiday house and the low pressure cylinder had burst leaking over the course of a few weeks and flooding a lounge. After assessing the job so many issues were ignored when the original plumber install this one causing many issues of our plumber to remedy. Things initially noticed was no cylinder seismic restraints, isolating vale on the inlet wasn’t installed and no drain at all was installed and the cylinder was in the middle of the house on a concrete slab.
No drain at all is a big no no when I comes to servicing. We ended up having to live change swap the inlet to the cylinder with a temporary drain to drain down the cylinder, making the job even more messy. Installing and fixing all these issues is FAR easier at the beginning before the original is installed rather than taking short cuts and making it harder for future Servicing. In the end we resolved all these issues and the job was a success, but a lot more difficult than it should have been so really if we all just put considerations in to our work before we start our jobs, we will all as a plumbing community be better off!
WHAT A TIGHT FIT… In and out in 3 hours! The call came in at 9:30AM with Mrs James advising that her old low pressure Rheem which is over 30 years old has burst! Considered about timing because her holiday was already booked for the following day hot water cylinders NZ made it happen! To get this job done we have to not only “squeeze” the actual job into the day but also had to SQUEEZE the HWC into the cupboard! After we detached the panel, we managed to get the Gib out of the way and rearrange the timber to make the new mains pressure tank fit. Luckily it was easy enough to run a drain and the tempering valve rated to be screwed straight into the tank making a what seemed to be a hard installation very easy! In just under 3 hours this installation was done for our stainless special rate! Stainless Steel mains pressure solar ready with 10 years warranty, now Mrs James can go on holiday without having to worry about her hot water when she gets back! If you have a situation where you believe a new tank might not fit, let us know and we will do an obligation free site visit to advise on what solution works best for you! Call us 0800 4 Cylinders
This 500 litre hot water cylinder arrived on site this morning with a massive dent, thanks a lot Mr delivery company! Thankfully the cylinder is stainless steel (not enamel). Being a custom made hot water cylinder makes the decision very difficult to send it back and wait on a new one. Additionally we have staff onsite not being able to commence with the work until the matter is resolved. A quick phone call to the cylinder delivery company turned out to work wonders enabling us to give the costumer a decent discount on the hot water cylinder. Of course the full warranty will also continue to apply. Just a quick pressure test to confirm all is ok and off we go! Sometimes things don’t always go as planned but the main thing for us here at hotwatercylinders.nz is to have a good and “can do” attitude in finding a way to keep everyone involved happy. After all, the dent is really just “cosmetic” and after we faced it towards the wall and completed the installation you couldn’t even notice it was there. Another satisfying hot water cylinder happy ending!
Do you like what you see? This specific installation was done in the heart of Auckland for just over $ 2400. The lucky owner of this property wanted his internal hot water cylinder gone, to allow for more space so we simply relocated his new one outside the property. Taking advantage of our special Rheem month we were able to work out a great deal to achieve what you see in the photo here. We replaced an old Rheem 135 Low Pressure with a new external 300L Rheem optima mains pressure. All hot water pipes were also nicely insulated to ensure top level efficiencies and savings. In this case the electrician was the owners mate so we didn’t provide the electrical services. We often get asked how we achieve high quality installations at such great rates and the simple answer is, we are efficient, qualified hot water cylinder technicians and buy our products in Bulk. This month We have TOO MANY RHEEMS that MUST BE SOLD! So get in quickly and ask for your obligation free quote. Great rates for great products (made in New Zealand) only at www.hotwatercylinders.nz!
